Nicolas Mathieu became the winner of the Prix Goncourt

PARIS, 7 Nov. French writer Nicolas Mathieu has been awarded a major literary award of France – the Prix Goncourt. This decision was made on Wednesday by the Goncourt Academy, choosing the best Francophone literature of 2018 book “Children after them” (Leurs enfants apres eux).

The action of his new book, the 40-year-old writer takes in 1992. According to reviewers, this book is “a story about first love, first summer, all of which predetermine”. As emphasized by literary critics, the Goncourt Academy stopped this time your choice on the “political and social mural, based on the life of French youth”. The members of the Academy read a few hundred novels released by publishers in recent months.

Along with the announcement of the winner of the Prix Goncourt is named and the winners of other literary awards. So, Renaud prize was awarded to writer Valerie Manteau for the book “the Road” (Le sillon). In it the author tells the story of a Turkish journalist of Armenian origin Hrant Dink.

Testament of the brothers Goncourt

Literary award of France was established by the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt. Their plan was first implemented in 1903, and since then, the award was given annually.

Critics of this literary tradition, however, put the blame of the Academy that she overlooked by prominent authors.

So, the award went to the classics of French literature Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who became not only a member of the Goncourt Academy, but also its President. The Academy was fully exonerated by the choice of the laureates of Marcel Proust, Maurice Druon and andré Malraux.

The award is intended to authors writing in the French language. However, it became the winners and writers of Russian origin Henri troyat, Elsa Triolet, Romain Gary, andré makin.

Ten euros from academics

At the Goncourt Academy no his apartment, and its single staff member works from home. All ten academicians, elected for life, work exclusively on a voluntary basis. No compensation for reading a few hundred novels and the selection of the winner they don’t require.
