Leonid Yuzefovich about the views on literature and historical heroes

The writer presented at the fair Non/fiction two new editions

Historical documentary prose should be the priority choice of the reader, in a rapidly declining volumes-read text. So says Leonid Yuzefovich, who presented at the fair Non/fiction new books — a collection of short stories “the lighthouse on Hiiumaa” and expanded edition of the novel “the Winter road”.

Fiction, — explained his point of view of Leonid Yuzefovich, — to which we are all accustomed and which is considered the “king” of the genre, the “king” of all literature, is not very high and a long history. Plutarch, Thucydides, Suetonius. What they were doing? He wrote prose? Or historical writings? It seems to me that in the future, if the written word will be something mean in their usual amounts, it will not belong to literature “pure fiction”, and it will go in the area of child, adolescent reading. Because we are reading serious literature — very little. And time, we also do not have enough to waste on so-called “fiction”. But what is called “true fiction”, I am also ready to accept in the rarest of cases, when to see the great talent of the author. That is my personal opinion“.

The stories included in the collection “the lighthouse on Hiiumaa”, thematically connected with the events and characters of past books by Leonid Yuzefovich “the Autocrat of the desert”, “Winter road”, “Kazaroza”. The story of Baron Ungern, by Leonid Abramovich says not the first decade, cluttered with new circumstances, names, events. This process resembles riding clod of wet snow ball with every turn becoming more and heavier. History with his continuous relationship of generations and the infinity of the space — globe, after all, round — it looks like a Mobius Strip, a Saga about Ungerne, with new information, reminiscent of a Perpetuum-mobile. In the title story that opens “the lighthouse”, Yuzefovich tells of the great grandfather of Roman Fedorovich Ungern — Baron Otto-Rangola-Ludwig Unger-Sternberg, formerly serving on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa lighthouse Dagerort. According to some reports, the caretaker had lit false beacons to ships swooped down on the coastal rocks and broke up, and then, with his gang, killed the crews and destroyed the court. However, in another version of a distant ancestor Ungern was a noble and good man, slandered in the course of judicial strife (division of land). Trying to understand this person

He makes a research trip to the island of Hiiumaa, but the man from the distant past and remains “unopened mystery.”

One of the key questions asked Leonid Abramovich during a meeting on Non/fiction was the attachment of the author to the chosen topic.

I find it hard to part with his characters, the author explained, — with his world. Can only change the attitude towards them. Here Lev Danilkin, once said that every person is the center of the Universe. Indeed, if we begin the work of Lenin or of some other man, then around him, formed the universe of people. We artificially allocate Lenin, Baron Ungern or white General Anatoly Pepelyaev and red commander, anarchist, future writer Ivan strode (the last two characters of the book “Winter road” Ed.). But you can make the center of the Universe of another person then our firm will be in his entourage. I’m with my main character till Ungern you can not give up“.

Particularly acute were voiced during the conversation, the topic of personal relations of the author to the heroes of the Civil war. Indeed, the dispute about who should erect monuments and whose monuments it is necessary to crush, crushes society, dividing it into irreconcilable opponents. White, red, green, pink, and other members of the fratricidal Civil war — one of them was closer to the truth? Who was the real hero?

I don’t know the answer to this question, — admitted he. —People can behave heroically. And calling him a hero and set an example to children is probably not necessary.

Heroes are those who keep their humanity and human qualities in terrible conditions.

And Pepelyaeva, and Strode succeeded. People who sacrificed their lives to save their comrades is a hero or not a hero? I would, in General, there are no monuments were set. Or just meant memorable places some simple marks, for example: “There was a great battle.” Or: “Here stood the typhoid barracks”. Because of typhus died far more than were killed in the fighting. Disparate numbers! I don’t know who and what monuments should be put. Life is much more complicated to established beliefs“.
